Maya Ruisn near the town of Palenque
National Park – 4 km west of Palenque. Located within the park is a world famous Maya city and ceremonial center dating from about 4 BC to 1100 AD. The Golden Age of the city was during the 600s AD when the Pakal king ruled. He designed and began the construction of inscriptions Temple, in which his tomb is located. After his death the temple, with the tomb within its base, was completed by one of his sons, Chan Bahlum, Many Large elaborate structures make this extensive site one of the most fascinating in Maya world. There is an excellent museum and a museum store-refreshment area located within the park.
Yaxchilan – a delightful boat ride down the Usumacinta River from Frontera Corozal, Mexico is on the left and Guatemala on the right. This is a large site totaling 185 structures and still visited occasionally by modern descendents of the original Maya. The site was opened to tourists in the 1980’s. Escudo Jaguar and his son, Bird Jaguar, are its best known rulers. The latter is popularly known as “Old Thunder Thighs”. Unfortunately some of the site’s most interesting features, carved wood lintels above some of the doorways, have been for preservation. Carbed stone lintels remain at the site.
Bonampak – this site is justly famous for three rooms of wall paintings. There are scenes of battles, sacrifices and triumphant celebrations. These are scenes of action, some quite grisly, others of great joy. The lime coating which accumulated over the centuries has been painstakingly removed from the paintings and the rooms are dimly lit to preserve the colors. The paintings are a powerful expression of the emotions they depict and the ancient Maya come alive for the viewer.
Waterfalls– this is an area of limestone karst so there are numerous waterfalls, Agua Azul is the largest and most famous of these. Very impressive amounts of water drop over numerous limestone escarpments forming a beautiful series of thunderous waterfalls. One may swim here in designated areas and with caution – do not stray into undesignated areas. Misol-Ha (“ha’ means water in Maya languages) is a smaller but quite beautiful waterfall. A cave behind the falls is the nightly abode of swallows that fly through the water to arrive there. Santa Clara is a quiet water area. There is a bridge from which one can observe the River Shumulha and its surroundings.
